Beginnings

For several years now, I've wanted to start a blog, but I always had trouble finding something to write about. Well, I think I found something.

I started running last April because I was tired of my pants being too tight.

I wasn't particularly overweight (well, my doctor did tell me that I was "obese", but he's skinny as a rail and was fixated on my BMI, which we all know can be misleading, right?) but I just felt blah.

Plus, I was perpetually one more blood test away from Type 2 diabetes, and my doc kept saying I needed to exercise.

Plus plus, I was months away from the big 5-0. And my little sister had started running in late 2009 and was training for a half marathon. That was enough; pride being what it is, I couldn't just sit and cheer her on.

So I started the Couch-to-5K running program.

And was shocked that, yes, I really did need to walk 90 seconds after jogging 60.

After a few days of this, I quit. My calf muscles hurt like crazy. My feet hurt, maybe I needed new running shoes. On and on.\

In June, following another warning from my doctor, I made two decisions: I would start and finish the C25K program, and I would take it one day at a time.

So I started the program again, found a 5K to train for as a goal, and, one day at a time, managed to finish the program.

Along the way, I rediscovered my love for running on trails and, against all manner of common sense (e.g., I've never run a marathon), registered for a 50K ultramarathon, the HAT Run, which is coming up in March.

So, I have a new hobby, a goal, and a blog. I'll report on races and significant training runs, comment on some of the gear I'm using, and maybe write a bit about my past attempts at exercising on a regular basis.

Thanks for reading.
